Why is Flat Cable better then Round Cable?

Technology has reached a point, where every little factor matters when we talk about digital video and audio transmission. The main advantage is that the conductors in the flat cable are much further away from each other than in the round cable; therefore, the crosstalk between conductors is greatly reduced. In addition, the cable becomes more flexible and more durable at the same time.

Definition of Crosstalk - the unwanted transfer of energy from one coupled signal path to an adjacent or nearby signal path.

HDMI 1.3b Bandwidth Requirements:
General HDMI specification requires enough bandwidth to support all current HDTV formats; however, the HDMI version 1.3b specification increases its bandwidth to 340 MHz (10.2 Gbps) to support future HD display devices that could provide higher resolutions, Deep Color and higher frame rates. HDMI 1.3b provides the highest audio quality as it enables the full, lossless audio data of Dolby TrueHD to be transferred digitally to AV Receiver’s. All of Atlona’s Flat HDMI cables passed the Compliance Test Specification (CTS) ensuring they meet all bandwidth specifications for current and future HD formats.

Further more, Atlona HDMI cables were tested and passed an even higher bandwidth (387MHz) than was required (340MHz).

Very cool device, no need to sell your Tv`s if you are moving out of USA or but new Tv`s if coming to USA or any other country. Why our converter is more expensive then $30 analog converters?

Analog converters can only work with only one Pal or NTSC standard and there is over 14 Pal formats and 2 NTSC formats. Analog converters in most of the cases will not convert Frequency 50/60Hz and therefore will not work with many TV`s.

Atlona Amplified HDMI Cables.

Here is a new addition to our Atlona cable line – Amplified HDMI cables. On the internet you can find a variety of HDMI extension options like: Fiber optic HDMI, HDMI over the CAT-5 line, Boosters and amplifiers that work with regular HDMI cables and more. In this release we will explain why those options, while still being great for installations, are inferior to these new cables. Let’s look at some of the advantages of Atlona amplified HDMI cables over some other commonly available options.

Let’s quickly compare Fiber optic, CAT-5 and our amplified HDMI. These cables use a 5 volt line, which exists within every HDMI connection to power the amplifier. Amplifier is built to match the length of the cable and provide the right amplification for that length. This eliminates over boosting, which is common to some amplifiers and boosters. Because these cables use an internal power line, they do not require external power supply, which is commonly used in boosters, amplifiers and CAT-5 extenders. These cables also do not require separate boxes at each end, which are used in CAT-5 extenders. Atlona Amplified HDMI cables also use connectors with a much smaller footprint, which is a large advantage over the connectors that are used in the Fiber Optic cables and most of all they do not cost as much as Fiber Optics.
One of the biggest advantages of these cables is that they are ready for the near future. Unlike every other extension application, Atlona amplified HDMI cables carry HDMI 1.3 rating. This rating translates into the cables ability to transfer a higher resolution signal, such as 1440p/WQXGA.

Another advantage is an ability to carry higher refresh rates. While the upper limit of HDMI 1.3 was not specified, it is expected for the refresh rates to reach as high as 120Hz. This is especially a big plus in computers, where high refresh rates are needed to reduce screen flickering. I’m guessing that we will soon see computers and computer monitors with HDMI inputs and outputs.

More Colors is another plus. Unlike previous HDMI rated cables could carry only up to 24-bit in color depth, which translates to 17 million colors. HDMI 1.3 can carry 30-bit, 36-bit and 48-bit color depth, which translates to 1B, 69B and 281T colors. Now that’s truly a lot of colors.
Ok, but what about audio? Let’s take a look at the new audio support that HDMI 1.3 provides.
HDMI 1.3 adds additional support for new, lossless compressed digital audio formats: Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™, which provide up to 8 channels of lossless surround sound. This will provide us with the highest quality audio experience – the same as in the movie theater.

Atlona Amplified HDMI cables also carry a CL2 rating, which means that the jacket complies with the standard for in-wall installations. They are ROhS rated, which means that they contain no harmful materials like Lead.

So in the end we have a better signal transfer, no over boosting, no need to tune amplifiers, ability to transfer higher resolutions, more colors, higher refresh rates, better audio, ratings for different installation applications. I can truly say that these cables are far more superior to other HDMI extension applications available today.

Atlona mini HDMI to Standard HDMI Cables.

Type C to Type A ( Bi-Directional ).

Hello again everybody. Today we are going to take a look at our brand new product that is still fresh out of the factory – mini HDMI cables, which are also referred to as “HDMI type C”. As we all know, regular HDMI cables are “HDMI type A” and dual-link HDMI cables, which are very rare and are not in general use - “HDMI type B”. Well, we wouldn’t be talking exactly about the type C, since we already have a review about that - this review will be about type A to C. Later on in the text I will tell you why you would need to convert one to the other.

HDMI Type C connectors are very interesting in construction. They are much smaller than HDMI Type A, but carry absolutely the same Audio/Video specs as HDMI Type A. This clearly defines that HDMI Type C will be widely used in portable electronics and such. I personally cannot wait to acquire a brand new camcorder that has HDMI. Now I have heard of rumors that TV’s will have type C jack on the front panel. Ok, that’s good, but how are you planning on connecting your camcorder or any other portable device to the rest of your home theater equipment. This is where type A to type C cable comes into play. Hello again everybody, I know it has been a little while since the last product review. Today we are going to take a look at our brand new product that is still fresh out of the factory – mini HDMI cables, which are also referred to as “HDMI type C”. As we all know, regular HDMI cables are “HDMI type A” and dual-link HDMI cables, which are very rare and are not in general use - “HDMI type B”.

HDMI Type C cables are very interesting in construction. They are much smaller than HDMI Type A, but carry absolutely the same Audio/Video specs as HDMI Type A. This clearly defines that HDMI Type C will be widely used in portable electronics and such. It is also rumored that televisions will have this kind of port on the front panel. I personally cannot wait to acquire a brand new camcorder that has HDMI.

Well, here’s the product that most of us with HDMI equipment been waiting for – Flat HDMI cables. There has been a lot of talk on the internet about this type of cables, but unfortunately it is very hard to find clearly defined advantages or disadvantages of these cables.

ATF series cables – the series of Atlona flat HDMI cables, also carry a CL2 rating, which means that the jacket complies with the standard for in-wall installations. They are ROhS rated, which means that they contain no harmful materials like Lead. They are available in Black and White colors to help you hide them if you are not planning on running them in walls. The jackets of these cables are paintable, to help you hide them, when running these cables on the walls. Because of the Flat design, the crosstalk in these cables is reduced. A Crosstalk is an interference that a cable generates. If you would look at the design of the flat cables, you will find that there’s a larger distance between the sets of twisted conductors. This particular design reduces the pickup of interference that neighboring set of conductors generate.
So in the end we have a better signal transfer, ability to transfer higher resolutions, more colors, higher refresh rates, better audio, ratings for different installation applications. It seems to me like this is the only piece that our Home Theaters are missing.

Well, here is another addition to the Atlona world of home entertainment – an analog audio/video to digital audio/video converter with video scaler built in. Let’s face it, some of us have been searching for a unit with a similar functionality for a little while now. Unfortunately the only equipment that we could come across were professional video scalers, for which you had to dish out a few thousand dollars. Yes, that kind of product is worth every penny, but not every one needs that kind of equipment. And those of us that did not need that kind of equipment, began to ask for alternatives from manufacturers.

Let us to be the first ones to introduce this kind of product. This audio/video converter has many advantages; one of the biggest advantages is of course its function – to convert regular analog video, which is transmitted via Composite or S-Video connection, into HDMI with no degradation. Audio signal is being implemented in to the hdmi as well, so you would only have one output connection to the TV ( which supports both audio and video ).
Another advantage is an ability to act as a video scaler. This feature allows you to select the resolution that you would be sending to your television. As an example your VCR sends 480 lines of interlaced resolution. No matter how good the signal strength is, 480 lines will never look as good as processed 720 or 1080 lines. While the picture quality will not be HD (because originally it was a very low resolution), the scaler is still going to enhance the image and scale up the image quality.

Acting as NTSC to PAL converter is another plus. This converter can take a standard resolution NTSC signal and convert it into a standard resolution Pal signal on HDMI. In order for it to convert into a High Definition Pal, you have to add a multisystem video converter in front of it.
In the end, we have a piece of equipment with the same capabilities as a more expensive product, just with less audio/video inputs.
